  • The Long March is a great miracle in the history of mankind. During the march, the First Front Army of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army had fought more than 380 battles and taken more than 700 county seats. The Red Army lost more than 430 officers ranked above battalion commander, with an average age below 30. They had climbed 18 mountains and waded 24 rivers. They had trekked through the snow-capped mountain and gone through the marshlands and grasslands, covering 12,500 kilometers of land across 11 provinces. In the October of 1935, they arrived in northern Shaanxi and joined forces with the branch of Red Army which had previously arrived there. In the October of 1936, The Second Front Army and the Fourth Front Army arrived in Gansu Province to join forces with the First Front Army, marking the victorious completion of the Long March.
     
    The year of 2016 marked the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Long March by the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army. To celebrate this anniversary, National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) invited composer YIN Qing and playwright ZOU Jingzhi for the opera commission The Long March based on true stories in history, of which the creation took four years.
     
    Since its world premiere on July 1, 2016, The Long March has been widely appreciated by various communities as a work of art with sound structure, moral integrity and emotional warmth. Created by top-class artists with great care, The Long March has the largest performing scale of NCPA’s opera commissions so far. On May 31, 2019, the opera will be brought by top performers to the stage of Guangzhou Opera House.
